Scales Logistics was created in 2003, initially as a subsidiary of our sister company, Geo.H.Scales Ltd.
Geo.H.Scales Ltd has had a long association with shipping in New Zealand. Its founder, George Scales, began operations in 1897, when he chartered sailing vessels to ship wool to Britain on behalf of a group of New Zealand sheep farmers. This was in direct response to the extremely high freight rates being charged by the British shipping lines, who had a virtual monopoly on this export trade.
This successful initiative, prompted George to form a private company in 1912, with share holding limited to New Zealand sheep farmers, to continue in the chartering and ships agency business.
Ships' agency had been the mainstay of Scales' business for the past 100 years. The 1980's, 90's and early 2000's saw many changes to the shipping industry, and Scales' in turn adapted with these changes and grew to be one of the largest and most successful shipping agents in New Zealand.
In 2002 Scales' were representing the shipping services of 2 large International liner companies in New Zealand, as well as continuing with its various port agency services around the country. With 5 offices in New Zealand, and a staff of over 90, Scales' customer base had developed extensively.
The diversity of this client base brought about new demands, and more specifically, there appeared to be increasing demands from some customers to provide a full logistics package.
Scales' responded by offering additional services, through the newly formed Scales Logistics, that complimented the existing liner agency work carried out by Geo. H. Scales Ltd.
Growing on the success of these initial services, Scales Logistics were then able to utilise the knowledge and experience that it had, to go beyond the confines of the liner agency business and offer total logistics solutions to suit all, completely independent of the agency business.
With a head office in Christchurch, Scales Logistics now has branches in Tauranga and Napier.
